Waubonsee pulls away in the final minutes to improve to 3-1 overall

Waubonsee and Carl Sandburg College engaged in a nip-and-tuck contest before the Lady Chiefs eventually prevailed 73-62. Sandburg (1-3) jumped out to a 10-point lead early on before Waubonsee (3-1) responded. The Lady Chiefs rallied to take a 20-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. The game remained close throughout the second period as Waubonsee headed to the locker room with a 44-42 half time advantage. Turnovers plagued both teams in a low scoring third quarter. Elizabeth Skaggs’ steal and breakaway lay-up just before the buzzer staked Waubonsee to a 53-51 lead heading into the final period. Coach Jim Sury’s squad then slowed down the tempo of the contest and pulled away in the last five minutes of the game.
Libby Love led a quartet of double-digit scorers for Waubonsee with 20 points. The freshman guard from Plano tallied three baskets from beyond the three-point arc and made six steals. Julianna Wadsworth netted 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out five assists. Skaggs chipped in with 15 points, seven boards and four steals. Coreisha Bailey added 10 points and eight assists, while Tynia Flores hauled down nine rebounds and Jewel Hupe added eight points.
The Chargers finished the game with 30 turnovers, while Waubonsee committed 22 miscues. The Lady Chiefs overcame a poor shooting performance from the foul line where they made just 12 of 21 (57 percent).
