Chiefs edge Owls behind Stark's career night
Opponent: Chiefs at Owls
83 - 80 (W)
Behind a breakout performance by John Stark the Chiefs were able to begin the second half of the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference slate with a hard fought 83-80 win at Oakton. The game was close throughout and Waubonsee (8-14, 3-5) was able to hang for the win because of a couple key defensive stops in the final minute.
Stark was the spark on the offensive side of things for the Chiefs. Waubonsee’s 6’11” center had a career-high 33 points and nine rebounds as he has suddenly emerged as a force in the middle. The freshman from Oswego High School has primarily been a reserve, averaging just 2.1 points-per-game in the first 16 contest. However, in his last five games he has averaged 18.8 points, nearly scoring three times as many total points as he did prior to that. Stark finished the game 16 of 23 (70 percent) from the floor, and is shooting 72 percent (43 of 72) over the last five games. Prior to that he was shooting just 30 percent (9 of 30) for the season.
Elliot McGaughy added 15 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Omar Hernandez was the only other Chiefs’ player in double figures with 10 points to go along with six boards. Sammie Hines dished out seven assists and tallied eight points, while Naiem Johnson added nine points, five assists and three steals.
