Chiefs open ISCC play with win over Owls
Opponent: Owls at Chiefs
86 - 72 (W)
Waubonsee opened Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play with an 86-72 victory over visiting Oakton Community College. The Chiefs (5-9, 1-0) gradually built a double digit lead in the first half and headed to the locker room with a 38-26 advantage. After a halftime presentation recognizing Waubonsee student-athlete successes from the 2014-2015 school year, the Chiefs then extended their lead to 17 points (63-46) midway through the second half. Oakton (3-14, 0-1) clawed their way back within nine points at 81-72, but it was too little and too late. An inside basket by Omar Hernandez and three made free throws in the final minute sealed the outcome.
Chris Buckley paced a balanced attack for Waubonsee with 20 points to go along with snagging six rebounds. Hernandez booked a collegiate career-high with 18 points while hauling down eight boards. Elliot McGaughy chipped in with 14 points and dished out eight assists, Naiem Johnson contributed 12 points and made three steals, and Ryan Sharp finished with nine points on three baskets from beyond the arc.
