Chiefs come up just short once again, begin 2016 slate with their eighth straight loss
Opponent: Chiefs at Spartans
88 - 91 (L)
The Chiefs began the 2016 portion of their schedule the same way they finished 2015. Waubonsee came up just short once again in falling to the Aurora University Junior Varsity 91-88 at the Spartans' Thornton Gymnasium. The loss is the eighth straight for the Chiefs (3-9) after a promising start to the season back in November. Playing for the first time in 19 days Waubonsee committed a dozen turnovers in the first half and found themselves down by double-digits midway through the first half. The Chiefs clawed their way back into the game and trailed just 46-44 at the break. Each time the Spartans would surge ahead in the second half Waubonsee responded.
The game was tied at 74 with 6:30 remaining before Aurora again grabbed the upper hand. The Spartans led 88-83 with a minute to go before Chris Bryson's driving layup pulled the Chiefs within three points with 0:42 left. Aurora answered with a basket of their own before Bryson scored again, was fouled, and completed the three-point play to make it 90-88 with 0:21 to go. A Waubonsee foul sent Aurora to the line where they converted just one of two foul shots with 0:13 left. After a Chiefs' timeout, Bryson's ensuing three-point attempt in the final seconds was off the mark allowing the Spartans to hang on for their second win over Waubonsee this season. The Spartans escaped with an 84-82 victory on November 23 in Erickson Hall.
Bryson finished with 19 points to lead the Chiefs in scoring. Chris Buckley and Sammie Hines each chipped in with 15 points. Naiem Johnson and Omar Hernandez each added 11 points, giving the Chiefs five players in double digits. Waubonsee was victimized by Aurora's long range shooting as the Spartans nailed 11 baskets from beyond the arc. The Chiefs also made just 12 of 22 (55 percent) from the foul line, contributing to their demise.
