Chiefs drop sixth straight with tough, two-point loss to COD
Opponent: Chaparrals at Chiefs
54 - 56 (L)
Waubonsee (3-7) came up just a bit short as they dropped a tightly contested game to the College of DuPage 56-54. The loss extended the Chiefs' losing streak to six games, with four of those defeats coming by two points or less and another in overtime. The Chaparrals (10-3) got a couple of key defensive stops in the final two minutes and a pivotal three-point basket from Christian Mathis with 1:12 remaining to go up by six points. The Chiefs pulled within two points on Elliot McGaughy's put back basket with just 0:04.8 left. A pair of Chiefs' fouls sent DuPage's Marcel Phillips to the line with 0:03.8 where he missed the front end of a one-and-one situation. The Chiefs corralled the rebounds and tried to push the ball up the floor quickly, but Sammie Hines' desperation 35-foot three-point attempt only grazed the side of the rim and bounded away as the buzzer sounded. The game was tied on four occasions with 12 lead changes, while DuPage enjoyed the biggest lead for either team at 14-5 in the early going. The Chaparrals held a slim 34-31 lead at halftime and it remained a close contest throughout the entire second half.
Naiem Johnson paced Waubonsee with 14 points, 12 coming in the first half, to go along with grabbing nine rebounds. Hines finished with 12 points while McGaughy tallied 10 points, snagged seven boards, handed out four assists and made four steals. Omar Hernandez also hauled down eight rebounds as the Chiefs won the rebounding war 44-40 overall. Mathis led the Chaparrals with a double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 boards.
