Waubonsee pulled away in the second half to down Carl Sandburg College 78-64 and improve to 3-1 on the season. The Chiefs built a double-digit lead at 35-24 with five minutes left in the first half. The Chargers (3-2) then went on a 10-0 run and trailed by just one point at halftime 37-36. Six minutes into the second half the Chiefs still led by only one point (44-43) when Sandburg suddenly went cold shooting from the field. In a five minute stretch the Charger misfired on four shots from the floor, missed four free throw attempts, turned the ball over three times and committed nine fouls on defense. Waubonsee took advantage and built a 55-43 lead and never looked back as the Chargers could get no closer than six points after that.
Naiem Johnson led Waubonsee in scoring with 16 points, connecting on four treys in five attempts. The sophomore guard also handed out four assists and grabbed six rebounds. Sammie Hines booked 13 points and hauled down nine boards, while making all five of his foul shots for the game. Elliot McGaughy also tallied 13 points, snagged nine rebounds, handed out seven assists and made three steals. Chris Bryson contributed nine points and four assists, while Alec Goetz and Houston McCullum each added eight points in the winning cause.
Sandburg shot just 19 percent (3 of 16) from three-point range in the second half and only 59 percent (13 of 22) from the foul line for the game. Meanwhile, the Chiefs grabbed a commanding 46-25 rebounding advantage and out scored the Chargers' bench 33-17.
