Lady Chiefs knock off #1 team in the nation at DMACC Invitational Tournament

Competing in the rugged Des Moines (IA) Area Community College Invitational Tournament, Waubonsee pulled off the upset of the 2014 NJCAA season by knocking off the top ranked team in the nation, Kirkwood (IA) Community College. After losing their first match of the tournament to 18th-ranked Iowa Central Community College, the 24th-ranked Lady Chiefs responded by handing Kirkwood only their third loss of the year, winning three straight games.
Waubonsee hung on to win the first two games by scores of 25-22 and 25-23, before completing the sweep of the Eagles (23-3) with a convincing 25-15 victory in game three. Waubonsee recorded 49 kills en route to improving to 23-9 overall on the season. Allison Humes led the way with 14 kills, two serving aces and three blocks. Erin Bowe chipped in with 10 kills and 15 digs, while Kaitlyn Richter had nine kills. Ashley Prost registered 37 assists and served up a pair of aces, Faith Montalbano booked three blocks, and Laura Lyons contributed 17 digs in the big win.
The Lady Chiefs started the day with a three game loss to Iowa Central. The Tritons, ranked as high as 4th nationally early in the season, prevailed 25-21, 25-17 and 25-17. Richter paced Waubonsee with nine kills, and Bowe added 14 digs and two blocks. Montalbano had two blocks as well, and Ellie Martin recorded 15 assists while splitting time at the setter position with Prost.
