NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament
Top-ranked Iowa Western pulls away in second half to knock off Lady Chiefs at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament
Opponent: #1 seed Iowa Western Community College (18-0-1)
0 - 6 (L)
Undefeated Iowa Western Community College, the top-ranked team in the nation and defending national champions, showed why they are the odds on favorite to repeat as NJCAA Division I champs. The Reivers dominated the action throughout and pulled away in the second half on their way to a 6-0 drubbing of the Lady Chiefs. Waubonsee, the 12th seed, managed just two shots on goal compared to 15 for Iowa Western.
The Reivers (19-0-1) scored their first goal on a penalty kick just three minutes into the game and eventually secured a 2-0 lead entering the break. Iowa Western then broke the game open in a 10 minute span of the second half, scoring four times. Waubonsee, now 15-4-2 overall on the season, is making just the second appearance at the National Tournament in the program's history and first under third-year head coach Brad Schlemmer. Waubonsee reached the National Tournament in 2011, when they also played the number one team Tyler (TX) Junior College in their first match, losing 7-2 to the eventual national champions. The Lady Chiefs are set to play eighth-seeded Butler (KS) Community College tomorrow, Nov. 18 at 10:00 a.m. (EDT) in Melbourne, Fla.
