Lady Chiefs, Cardine give Lancers the boot in second half to clinch ISCC championship
Opponent: Lady Chiefs at Lancers
3 - 1 (W)
Waubonsee rallied in the second half to beat the College of Lake County 3-1 and grab the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title. The victory completed an undefeated 6-0 conference season for the Lady Chiefs as they captured the third ISCC crown in the program's history, and first under third-year coach Brad Schlemmer. The Lancers took a 1-0 lead into the intermission under the lights at the Libertyville Township Soccer Complex, controlling much of the action in the first half. The second half was a completely diffrent story as the Lady Chiefs dominated play throughout. Behind Kelli Cardine's sharp shooting, a re-energized Waubonsee squad responded early in the second half. Off a free kick from nearly 20 yards out Cardine snuck a shot past the Lancers' keeper Quadalupe Fuentes into the right side of the goal to tie the game at one. Waubonsee then quickly used that momentum to grab the upper hand just 20 seconds later. After stealing the ball from the Lancers, Andrea Garcia took a pass from Haley Kilbride and blasted a shot into the net to suddenly give Waubonsee a 2-1 lead. Cardine then iced the game with 20 minutes remaining by scoring again off a free kick from about 22 yards out. The sophomore drilled a perfect shot just inside the upper right corner that Fuentes could only watch as it nestled into the side of goal. Waubonsee (12-3-1) out shot the Lancers 16-5 for the match, with Waubonsee keeper Lisa Gaffino registering four saves.
