Waubonsee swept Highland Community College in three straight games to knock the Cougars out of the Region IV Division II Tournament. The Lady Chiefs (34-6) edged the upset minded Cougars, who finished the season just 5-28 overall, in the first two games. Waubonsee held off Highland 25-22 in the opening contest and then held on for a 25-23 win in game two. The Lady Chiefs completed the sweep with a 25-13 triumph in the third game. Erin Bowe paced Waubonsee's attack with 12 kills, 22 digs and three blocks. Ellie Martin added 31 assists and two aces, while Kaitlyn Richter and Lexi McKenzie each recorded 16 digs.
The Lady Chiefs' first round victory was their 34th of the season, one shy of the single-season school record of 35 set in 1994. However, that squad, under the direction of Sally (Toma) Kempton, played 59 games that season. The victory also moves the Lady Chiefs into the Final Four of the Region IV Division II Tournament. Waubonsee will host nationally-ranked Kankakee Community College on Wednesday, November 6, at 6:00 p.m. in Erickson Hall. The Cavaliers (29-15) come in ranked 25th in the latest NJCAA poll. The unranked Lady Chiefs have the third most wins of any NJCAA Division II team, and all six of Waubonsee's losses have come to three ranked squads. The Lady Chiefs have lost to 23rd-ranked South Suburban three times, 19th-ranked Moraine Valley twice and Kishwaukee, which was tabbed 10th nationally in the pre-season poll.
