13th-ranked Chiefs pound Cavaliers behind 'hat trick' by Lopez

The Chiefs scored three times in each half and cruised to a 6-1 victory over Kankakee Community College in Sugar Grove. Waubonsee's Alberto Lopez took over the team lead in goals scored by recording a 'hat trick' on the day. Lopez booked his 9th, 10th and 11th goals of the season to move into a tie for 23rd nationally in goals scored among NJCAA Division I players. The freshman from Aurora East High School netted his first goal against the Cavaliers eight minutes into the match with an assist from Diego Munoz and Edgar Alcanter. Rodrigo Bernal put the Chiefs ahead 2-0 midway through the first half as Lopez and Bernie Conley assisted him on the play. Victor Corral then put the Chiefs ahead 3-0 with 6:45 to go until halftime off a feed from Daniel Ruiz. Kankakee avoided the shutout when Sameer Majeed scored midway through the second half. Lopez responded with his second score of the contest eight minutes later with an assist from Salvador Villagrana. The 13th-ranked Chiefs extended their lead to 5-1 when Lopez completed his 'hat trick' with exactly five minutes remaining as Oscar Martinez was credited with the assist. J.J. Clason then finished off the scoring when he took a pass from Martinez and tallied his second score of the season just a minute later. Waubonsee (11-1) and Kankakee ended the match even in shots on goal with 14 each. Chiefs' keeper Norberto Sanchez was credited with 13 saves for the game.
