Chiefs clinch back-to-back ISCC titles with Moraine Valley loss to Elgin
Opponent: Chiefs at Panthers
4 - 2 (W)
Waubonsee downed Morton College 4-2 and clinched their second consecutive Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title by virtue of Moraine Valley's 3-2 loss to Elgin Community College. The Chiefs (10-1, 6-0) assured themselves of at least a share of the crown by knocking off the Panthers at the South Cicero Sports Complex behind a huge effort by Diego Munoz.
The freshman from West Chicago scored twice within the first 15 minutes of the match to put the Chiefs in control early on. Morton got within a goal when Sergio Otalora scored midway through the first half. It remained 2-1 heading into the intermission before the Chiefs pulled away in the second half. Munoz assisted Edgar Alcanter on a goal 12 minutes into the second half for a 3-1 Chiefs' lead. Munoz then registered his second assist with 11:08 to go when he set up Alberto Lopez for a fourth Waubonsee goal. The Panthers responded with a score a minute later, but where not able to get any closer despite out shooting the Chiefs 16-12 for the match. Keeper Luis Gallardo turned back a dozen Morton shot attempts to secure the victory.
Elgin then knocked off second place Moraine Valley, giving the Cyclones their second loss of the season and the undefeated Chiefs back-to-back ISCC titles. Waubonsee, which won the ISCC crown for the first time ever last fall, will attempt to finish with an unblemished ISCC mark when it closes out this year's conference slate against the Cyclones next Tuesday, Oct. 5.
