Chiefs move one step closer to capturing back-to-back ISCC titles
Opponent: Lancers at Chiefs
2 - 1 (W)
The Chiefs moved a step closer to winning the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title for the second straight year with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the College of Lake County. Waubonsee, now 5-0 in league play, remains a game up on second-place Moraine Valley at 4-1 with two conference matches left. The Chiefs and Cyclones are set to meet in Sugar Grove on Oct. 8 in the ISCC finale for both squads. Waubonsee's Bernie Conley scored both goals in the victory over the Lancers, including the game-winner with just 0:56 left on the clock. The freshman from Hinckley-Big Rock netted his first score of the contest and sixth of the year midway through the first half with an assist from Victor Corral. The Lancers then tied the match halfway through the second period. Just when it appeared the two teams would head into overtime, Conley took a feed from Alberto Lopez and finished off his team-leading seventh goal of the season to move Waubonsee's record to 8-1 on the season. The Chiefs also moved up to 15th on the latest NJCAA Division I Men's poll, the highest ranking for the program since 1983. Waubonsee finished last season ranked 17th nationally after finishing 16-3-1 overall. For the game, Lake County out shot the Chiefs 13-11 as Luis Gallardo registered seven saves and Jose Lopez made five saves while sharing time in goal for Waubonsee.
