Prairie State College
Chiefs down Pioneers on neutral turf
Opponent: Chiefs at Pioneers
3 - 1 (W)
Waubonsee improved to 7-1 overall with a key 3-1 victory over Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference foe Prairie State College. The Chiefs and Pioneers, meeting on Kankakee Community College's pitch, went toe-to-toe throughout the match. Waubonsee eventually out shot the Pioneers 18-15 and held on for the win with excellent play by keepers Luis Gallardo and Jose Lopez. A spectacular save by Lopez on a Prairie State penalty kick, and 10 saves by Gallardo thwarted the Pioneers' offense. Meanwhile, just a minute and a half into the game Waubonsee's Diego Munoz scored off an assist from Eddie Gaytan. The Pioneers tied the game with a score six minutes later before Alberto Lopez then booked his fifth goal of the season with an assist from Munoz. Waubonsee held that narrow 2-1 advantage the final 30 minutes of the first half and well into the second half. The Chiefs then tallied a pivotal third goal midway through the second period. Again Munoz was involved as he assisted Rodrigo Bernal on a goal to help clinch Waubonsee's seventh win of the season, currently tying the Chiefs for the second most wins among NJCAA Division II teams in the nation. Waubonsee is also ranked 19th nationally in the most recent poll, the highest ranking for any team in the NJCAA's Region IV.
