Elgin Community College
Chiefs secure ISCC win over ECC with late goal
Opponent: Spartans at Chiefs
3 - 1 (W)
In their quest to defend their Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title, the Chiefs (4-1, 2-0) took another step toward that goal by downing Elgin Community College 3-1 in Sugar Grove. Waubonsee broke a scoreless tie midway through the first half when Alberto Lopez took a feed from Edgar Alcanter and blasted a shot past the Spartans' keeper. The Chiefs added to that lead just before halftime as Daniel Ruiz netted his first goal of the season with an assist from Frank Ortiz. It remained 2-0 throughout much of the second half until Elgin avoided the shutout with a goal off of a penalty kick with nine minutes left to play. The Spartans frantically tried to get a game-tying goal in the final minutes before Lopez sealed the deal for the Chiefs. Ortiz set him up for his second goal of the game to give Waubonsee a 3-1 lead with just 59 ticks left on the clock. The game was definitely closer than the final score indicated as the Chiefs out shot Elgin only 11-10. Luis Gallardo recorded four saves in goal for Waubonsee the first half, and Norberto Sanchez Jr. was credited with five saves in the second half.
