Own goal sinks Chiefs in loss to Chargers

Conference: No

Opponent: Chiefs at Chargers
2 - 3 (L)

On a sunny and warm day, Waubonsee made the two-hour trek out to Galesburg to take on the Chargers of Carl Sandburg College. Once the match was over, the drive back must have felt much longer and overcast to the Chiefs. With the aide of an own goal by Waubonsee, the Chargers snagged a 3-2 victory to hand the Chiefs (3-1) their first loss of the season. Waubonsee accidentally gave the Chargers their first goal and an early 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the contest. That miscue seemed to energize Sandburg as they grabbed a 2-0 lead on a goal by Jalen Jones just 11 minutes later. Waubonsee responded shortly thereafter as Alberto Lopez drilled an unassisted goal just two minutes later. The Chiefs then tied the score as Bernie Conley registered an unassisted goal of his own with 13 minutes left until halftime. The score remained deadlocked at two until Sandburg's Jesse Bathelt was able to get a shot past Waubonsee keeper Luis Gallardo with 30 minutes left to play. The Chargers then played keep away, controlling the ball and holding Waubonsee at bay down the stretch to hang on for the win. Sandburg out shot the Chiefs 10-6 as Gallardo was credited with seven saves on the day.
