Chiefs outlast Scots in record-setting five overtimes to pick up first ISCC victory
Opponent: Chiefs at Scots
71 - 67 (W) 5 OT's
Waubonsee and McHenry County engaged in a marathon battle, with the Chiefs emerging victorious 71-67 in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference record five overtimes. Waubonsee led the host school 24-18 at halftime before that score was reversed in the second half. The low-scoring affair was tied at 42 at the end of regulation, but no one could have predicted that it would take 25 more minutes of play to determine a winner. Both teams tallied four points in the first extra session, and five each in the second overtime to begin the third extra period deadlocked at 51. Both squads managed just four points again in the third overtime and then booked seven points in the fourth segment of bonus basketball as they played the equivalent of another full half of play. Knotted at 62 heading into the fifth extra period, fatigue may have finally caught up to the Scots as Waubonsee out scored the home team nine to five to pull out their first ISCC win of the season.
Raheem Jackson finished as the game's high-scorer with 26 points. The Chiefs' guard nailed 12 of 14 free throws along the way, and registered six steals. Ryan Suttle booked 16 points and made three steals, while Josh Lynn tallied 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds to just miss posting a double-double. Tom Okapal grabbed 10 boards and chipped in with eight points before fouling out. The Chiefs finished the game just 3 of 17 (18 percent) from three-point range, while the Scots struggled just as much from beyond the arc as they finished 6 of 33 (18 percent) from long distance. A key to the outcome of the game was the 27 turnovers committed by McHenry, including four costly ones in the final overtime period.
