Martin, Chiefs hold off IVCC for 4th win

Waubonsee earned its' fourth win of the season by holding on to defeat visiting Illinois Valley Community College 86-76. Behind a spirited effort by Ricardo Martin and the three-point shooting of Mike Nichols, the Chiefs shot 58 percent from the floor on the way to building a 38-30 halftime lead. The 6'8" Martin scored 11 first half points, including four monsterous dunks to spark the Chiefs in the paint. Meanwhile, Nichols did his damage from the perimeter as he nailed four of his five three-point attempts for 12 first half points. The Chiefs (4-2) kept the Eagles at arm's length throughout much of the second half until they made a short run and pulled to within 68-67 with 6:29 remaining. But two key baskets and four free throws by Roderick Adair, and a shot-clock beating 17-foot fade away jumper by Nick Townes helped the Chiefs build their lead back up to 10 points at 78-68 with 4:28 left. Illinois Valley (2-3) never got closer than six points the rest of the way. Martin finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Nichols booked 18 points and Adair added 17 points. Townes contributed 16 points while Raheem Jackson chipped in with 12 points, seven assists and three steals.
