Author Kalisha Buckhanon to Visit Waubonsee

Author Kalisha Buckhanon will visit Waubonsee Community College’s Sugar Grove Campus on Wednesday, March 1, from 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. to read from her work and discuss writing and publishing with Assistant Professor of English Dan Portincaso. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the college’s Academic and Professional Center Event Room.

A graduate of the University of Chicago, Buckhanon has written three novels — Solemn, Conception and Upstate. Together, these novels comprise what she calls “a highly personal triology on Black American youth.”

When she was 27-years-old, Buckhanon was introduced by Essence Magazine as one of “Three Writers to Watch.” Her honors include an American Library Association ALEX Award, Friends of American Writers Award, Terry McMillan Young Author Award, Illinois Arts Council Fellowship, Hurston-Wright Foundation Debut shortlist and Pushcart Prize nomination.
