Waubonsee Selected to Participate in Civic Learning Initiative
Waubonsee Community College is one of only five community colleges across the nation chosen to participate in the Lead Initiative on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement, sponsored by Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA).
“Community colleges are in a unique position to provide opportunities for students to connect with their communities in different ways than they have before,” said Dr. Melinda James, Waubonsee’s Vice President of Student Development.
All 73 colleges and universities participating in the initiative were selected based on their current and planned efforts in the areas of community involvement and engagement.
According to James, Waubonsee currently has pockets of involvement across the college — from the less formal service projects done by student clubs to the more formal Congress to Campus program, which gives students the chance to meet and learn from former U.S. Representatives.
“This initiative enables us to approach civic learning and engagement more strategically and to create more specific objectives,” James said. “We can have a conversation about what a good citizen is and how we help a student become one.”
