Waubonsee Partners with Local High Schools to Tackle College Readiness
Waubonsee Community College hosted its third College and Career Readiness Summit at the Sugar Grove Campus on Nov. 13. The event brought together faculty and staff from Waubonsee and 16 area high schools to discuss ways to better prepare students for college and the work world. A panel of high school and college students also shared their insights about the transition to college at the event.
The summit marked the debut of several new readiness committees, including ones centered on career and technical education, literacy and science. The English committee discussed unpacking the common core and shared formative assessments. The science faculty discussed the Next Generation Science Standards and college level gateway courses. The math committee discussed standards implementation and standards based grading.
A highlight of the principals and superintendents meeting was the distribution of assessment reports for each high school. Summarizing student scores on the college’s placement and/or ACT tests, these reports provide valuable data as to which courses best prepare students for college success.
