Overview

Phlebotomists are a vital part of a health service team. These clinical lab technicians lead the way with diagnostic testing and other blood-related studies. 

It’s a specialized field with positive job outlook as well as good exposure to many other medical specialties.

Students at Waubonsee can obtain their phlebotomy certificate and start a rewarding career in as little as one semester. Plus, students may be eligible for financial support through the PATH grant.

Studying Phlebotomy at Waubonsee

At only 6 credit hours, Waubonsee’s Phlebotomy Technician Certificate Program is a quick way to advance in the health care field. Classes are taught by knowledgeable faculty in our state-of-the-art facilities and prepare students for lab technology careers with a combination of practical classroom studies and 100 hours of hands-on clinical externships.

Graduates who meet certain requirements will be eligible to take the national certification exam from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

Working in Phlebotomy 

Analysis of a patient’s blood reveals an vast, overwhelming amount of medical information to doctors and other health professionals. Skilled phlebotomists make the analytical and diagnostic process possible—and successful—by properly collecting, transporting, handling and processing specimens. Their work is done in hospitals, health centers, labs and transfusion centers. And because they are exposed to a wide variety of medical information, phlebotomy is often the first step in a career that extends into other medical specialties.
