During the summers (South American winters) of 2005, 2006, and 2007, I lived in Santiago, Chile while studying Spanish at the ECELA school on Roman Diaz. For a month in 2006, I lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina, attending the ECELA language school in the Recoleta district. Additionally, I visited the fort city of Colonia de Sacramento, Uruguay. The people, the landscape, the cities, the cultures, the food, and the pace of life in these incredible countries captivated me. Hopefully, one day I will return to Santiago and BA...perhaps on a more permanent basis.

I love watching old episodes of Columbo starring Peter Falk. Besides loving the wrinkled trench coat, the beat-up car, and the sad-faced dog, I really got a kick out of Columbo's interrogation techniques. The hand to the side of his slightly tilted head, the cigar, and the obligatory question, "there's just one more thing" were staples of every episode. But I especially enjoyed the way the writers and directors of  the show manipulated our  point of view. Since we spend the first half hour of the show alongside the murderer, we become implicated in the crime and begin to identify with the villain. I would become nervous that Columbo was going to trip the villain up...knowing full well that he always got his man...or woman as the case may be. Finally, I got a kick out of the tiny mistakes these smug killers would make that Columbo latched onto in order to hang them.  During the first 30 minutes of each program, I would try to figure out what exactly would spell the murderer's ruin. As a result, watching Columbo became akin to watching a Hitchcock film, during which I madly searched the screen for the director.
