Where Learning Never Ends
In 1996 Waubonsee Community College formed a chapter of what would become the Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI).
The LLI is an open membership organization offering a stimulating non-credit academic environment for mature learners over age 50. The vitality of the LLI is fueled by the wealth of experience contributed by its members. Members plan, organize, and staff classes and other educational activities for each other in order to:
- facilitate members' pursuit of a broad spectrum of intellectual interests
- create a lifelong commitment to learning in a convivial atmosphere that fosters a social as well as intellectual bond
- engage in outreach activities that support non-members in the college and neighboring communities
- LLI's goal is to offer members the opportunity to challenge their minds by studying topics they want to learn. The program is rich in diversity because it consists of participants from all different backgrounds, regardless of education, who share their knowledge and life experiences in an academic setting.
- Members decide what they wish to study. A facilitator structures the course according to the subject being presented and participants engage in a participatory learning adventure.
Here's what current members have to say about their experience in the LLI:
"It offers an experience to learn and enjoy new friends with like interests. It's just great--like a minivacation."
--Kally Klose, Batavia
"It is an experience you can't afford to pass up if you love learning."
--Barbara Armbruster, Geneva
"It was good to hear a variety of viewpoints...I plan to be a facilitator in the future."
--Adam Holtz, Batavia
