A Tale of Two Coaches
William “Bill” Prince was the first baseball coach at Waubonsee Community College. Coach Prince served as the first athletic director and physical education instructor from 1967 to 1974, when he relinquished his role as athletic director. Prince also coached the cross country team in 1972-1973. In 1977 he resigned as baseball coach. Prince then coached golf from 1978-1984.
Prince’s baseball teams were quite successful, winning the Skyway Conference twice, being nationally ranked in 1974 and ending the season as Region IV runner-up in 1975. Prince also developed the computerized statistics system for the Skyway Conference, which is still in use. Another lasting legacy of Coach Prince is the Fitness Center located in Erickson Hall, which he is credited with originating.
Coach Prince has been inducted into the Waubonsee Community College Athletic Hall of Fame and the Skyway Conference Hall of Fame.
David Randall took over the head baseball coaching position at Waubonsee Community College for the 1978 season. Previously, Randall was starting center fielder for the Chiefs for the 1972-3 seasons. Following his associate degree, he went to University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he continued to play baseball and studied physical education and health. Randall also earned a master's degree from Northern Illinois University. In 1977, he served as an assistant coach under Bill Prince, and took over the following year. In 1984 Randall became athletic manager, a position which has responsibility for a 13-team athletic department.
In his career as head coach, Randall has led the Chiefs to well over 700 wins, Skyway Conference championships in 1984, 1988 and 1998, NJCAA Region IV championships in 1996 and 1998, NJCAA sectional titles in 1992 and 1993, and a NJCAA Division III World Series runner-up finish in 1996.
Coach Randall has been honored by several different bodies for his coaching achievements. He received the Chicago Hit and Pitch Junior College Coach of the Year award in 1996, and has been inducted into the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2002) and the NJCAA Region IV Hall of Fame (2005). Randall was honored by Waubonsee Community College as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 1984.
