Waubonsee Community College invites its district residents to share in the celebration of the completion of the first building in the 2020 College Master Plan, the new Campus Operations and central storage facility.
The “Building for the Future” event will feature self-guided tours of the new facility, a “Visitor’s Center” complete with a photo timeline of the building’s progress, trivia question quiz, refreshments and music.
The event will be held on Friday, August 19 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m on the north end of the college’s Sugar Grove campus.
Prizes for the free drawings include framed wildflower photographs by Barb Gore, WCC Chemistry instructor and nature photographer. Gore is a member of Morton Arboretum’s Nature Study and Camera Club, and the Fox Valley Nature Artists League.
The college’s 20,000-square-foot Campus Operations building, which provides areas for maintenance services, including a maintenance shop, grounds, vehicle maintenance, garage facilities and central supply storage, will be showcased. Its move across the Sugar Grove campus to the northern perimeter has increased pedestrian safety, freed up additional parking
space and made room for the Academic and Professional Center targeted for breaking ground in November 2005.
The Campus Operations building, along with the college’s new Science Building currently under construction, was designed by the Chicago-based architectural firm of Holabird & Root LLC.
In addition to these two buildings, Phase I of the Waubonsee’s 2020 College Master Plan includes acquisition of property for the new downtown Aurora campus. The new facility will be built just west of the Fox River on the block bounded by Galena Boulevard, West Downer Place and North River Street.
The fourth and final project of Phase I was site selection for the Plano Campus, which will be located on a nine-acre site adjacent to the Lakewood Springs development that is currently under construction north of Highway 34 and west of Eldamain Road near Lake Plano.
Phase II of the plan will include the construction of a new Student Center and Academic and Professional Center on the Sugar Grove campus, while Phase III calls for an addition to the existing Henning Academic Computing Center and an expansion of Erickson Hall to create more space for sports, athletic and fitness programs.
Implementation of the 2020 College Master Plan would not have been possible without successful passage of college referenda in 2002 and 2003. Voters in the college district overwhelmingly expressed their support of these projects. |
